Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to contest particular decisions from the official, following the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
