The global fast-food chain has taken down a Christmas advertisement created with generative AI following receiving widespread criticism on social media.

The 45-second spot was produced using AI video tools and was originally released online for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.

Viewer Reaction and Decision to Pull

Following its publication, commenters lambasted the employment of AI in the advert. Many described it as "disturbing" and "poorly edited".

"This incident represents an important learning as we examine the appropriate application of Artificial Intelligence," commented a statement from McDonald's Netherlands.

The advert was developed for McDonald's by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It portrayed various things that often go badly over the Christmas break, with the slogan "the most terrible time of the year".

The Trend of AI-Generated Ads

Campaigns that feature AI tools have emerged as a rising trend among large corporations, particularly for the Christmas campaign season.

  • Coca-Cola has also released consecutive AI-created Christmas ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: As clips created using current AI video tools are more likely to degrade the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be only six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also raised worries about automation in the advertising sector, with some observers stating it could negatively impact opportunities for camera crews.

Defense from the Production Company

Following the commercial being pulled, The Sweetshop's head, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the advert.

According to her, the development required "over a month and a half" and involved generating "numerous versions" which were then crafted afterward "in the same way we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't just an AI trick," she commented. "We consider it a proper commercial."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was predominantly criticized, the reception for other AI-assisted holiday ads has been divisive.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created Christmas ad from Coca-Cola according to analysis garnered a significant "positive feedback" from the public.

However, several companies have also faced criticism for using the technique in marketing. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that critics called "low-effort" and "disturbing".

The episode underscores the evolving debate within the marketing and creative industries about the trade-off between technological innovation and human craftsmanship.
