Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture at Spectators

Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. It was essentially an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the gesture was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong digit,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated net worth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.
